If you are trying to figure out whether you need Ultimate Affiliate Pro, Ultimate Membership Pro or both, the easiest answer is to stop thinking of them as competing plugins.
They do different jobs.
I have used both for years, and this combination is the foundation I use when I want WordPress to handle memberships and a real affiliate or MLM structure without paying for a giant proprietary MLM platform.
Ultimate Membership Pro handles the member. Ultimate Affiliate Pro handles the referral relationship and commissions.
Once that clicks, the setup makes a lot more sense.
What Ultimate Membership Pro handles
Ultimate Membership Pro is the access side of the system.
It handles things such as registration, membership levels, free or paid subscriptions, protected content, member account pages and payment workflows.
If someone joins your site as a Free member or upgrades to Pro, that is the kind of job I give UMP.

What Ultimate Affiliate Pro handles
Ultimate Affiliate Pro is the referral and commission side.
It gives affiliates referral links, tracks referrals, calculates commissions, supports affiliate ranks and includes multi-level marketing functionality.
If someone refers a new customer and needs to receive credit or commission for it, that is UAP’s job.

Why I use both
Imagine you run a paid network marketing community.
You need people to register. Some may have free access and others may have paid membership levels. You need protected pages and a member account.
That is UMP.
Now imagine members can refer new people. You need to know who referred whom, generate referral links, calculate commissions and potentially build a multi-level downline.
That is UAP.
Trying to force one plugin to do both jobs makes the setup harder than it needs to be.
The basic setup order I recommend
- Install and configure Ultimate Membership Pro.
- Create your membership levels.
- Test registration, login, access and payments.
- Install and configure Ultimate Affiliate Pro.
- Create the basic affiliate program and test a direct referral.
- Connect your commission workflow to the transaction or membership you actually want to reward.
- Only then add MLM or more complicated commission rules.
I prefer this order because it gives you two working systems before you combine them.
Do users need two WordPress accounts?
No. Both plugins work around WordPress users. You are not trying to create a separate WordPress login for the membership system and another one for the affiliate system.
What matters is whether the user is a member, an affiliate or both, and how you configure the workflow that assigns those roles inside the plugins.
This is also why I test everything with normal user accounts instead of only looking at the administrator dashboard.
How a membership sale can become an affiliate commission
Here is the basic idea.
An affiliate shares their referral link. A visitor follows it and purchases or registers for the membership you are promoting. The affiliate plugin tracks the referral relationship and, based on your configured integration and rules, creates the referral or commission.
The membership plugin is responsible for granting the customer’s membership access. The affiliate plugin is responsible for rewarding the affiliate.
That separation is what makes the combination useful.
How MLM fits into the UAP + UMP setup
If you are only running a normal affiliate program, you may stop at the direct referrer.
If you are running an MLM structure, UAP can add multiple levels above the direct affiliate.

What I would not do
I would not install both plugins, activate every extension and then start testing.
That gives you too many possible failure points.
Build membership first. Test it.
Build direct affiliate tracking second. Test it.
Add multi-level commissions third. Test them.
That sounds slower, but it is much faster than troubleshooting a system where twenty things changed at once.
What about WooCommerce?
You can also bring WooCommerce into the stack if products are part of the business.
Ultimate Membership Pro has a WooCommerce payment integration for assigning membership levels to products, and Ultimate Affiliate Pro can be used with WooCommerce referral tracking.

Where this combination makes sense
I like UAP + UMP when the site needs both a membership layer and a referral or network layer.
That could be a network marketing company, paid community, affiliate membership site, training platform or another business where users join the site and can also refer other users.
It is not automatically the right stack for every WordPress site. If all you need is a simple affiliate link for a few products, this may be more system than you need.
How this fits the MLM.Page setup
MLM.Page uses Ultimate Membership Pro for memberships and Ultimate Affiliate Pro for affiliates. I then build the other pieces around those systems instead of trying to replace them.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Ultimate Affiliate Pro and Ultimate Membership Pro?
You need both when you want UMP’s membership and access features plus UAP’s affiliate, referral or MLM features. If you only need one of those jobs, you may only need the corresponding plugin.
Can the same user be a member and an affiliate?
Yes. Both systems operate around WordPress users, so your workflow can allow a user to participate in the membership system and the affiliate system.
Can UAP pay commissions on membership sales?
UAP supports integrations and MLM workflows that can work with Ultimate Membership Pro. Configure and test the exact referral source and commission rules you want before launching.
Can I use WooCommerce with both?
Yes. Both plugins have WooCommerce-related workflows, which can be useful when products and membership access are part of the same site.
